A long pause...

It's been a long time since my last post, more than seven years ago...

Many things have changed since then, in the world and in my private, but incredibly I still receive mails from you, with information about the anchorages in Croatia and questions why I stopped to update the anchorages map, so I will explain what happened and why I paused that long:

First: In the earlier days, the anchorages map was based on google maps, and usage of the google maps APIs was free. But in 2017 google changed the policy of the google maps API: Usage was restricted and not free any more. Google wanted to get money from API user, see details here
Since my blog and my map are free content, readable for everyone without paying money, I did not want to spend money to provide this content. So I just did not care about the policy changes and just waited, what would happen. As expected, from one day to the other, the map did not work anymore, instead an google error popup appeared. Frustrating...

Second: At the same time, I moved my SY Wosamma to Slovenia, and later to Italy (see details about the route here). It was time for a change, time to sail new waters & time to see new shores. I enjoyed this a lot, but naturally this reduced my interests in the Croatian anchorages and also my motivation to provide information about them. And therefore the blog simply remained as it was, without new news, and the map simply remained as it was, with the google error popup...

But: Never say never again. Times have changed an I now feel motivated to continue this project!

In the last weeks I changed the map base to openseamap satellite images, the technical framework to openlayers mapping library, and repaired the main functionality of the map. Since both of this sources are open-source (and not proprietary as google maps is), I hope to be save for the future from now on.

In the last weeks I also started to update the anchorages information in the map. Most of the information is out of date, but with the help of your mails and additional investigations I can update the data and show the current state as it is. Of course, this is a never ending process...

I will keep you up to date via this blog. Of course I appreciate your input, so if you have news about the anchorages in Croatia, just let me know. Thank you!
